Hi Cube Mates,
Well, it seems I've gotten into an interesting pickle. The Short story: A) I was given a 450MHz Cube running OS 10.4.11 (installed) by one of my Japanese students here in Japan C) The Cube is running 3.3.2f1 Boot ROM Version D) To install the Powerlogix firmware, the Boot ROM version must be 4.1.9~ E) To install Boot ROM version 4.1.9, the Cube must be running OS 9.1 or later, but NOT OS 10.~ F) I don't have the OS 9.1 (nor any pre-10.~ OS disc) G) My Cube is not connected to the internet (UPDATE: not connected with OS9, which I now have on Aug.27th)(but, was connected with OSX from the start)(And I might add, jumping back into OS9 was a whole new world, that I really didn't manage very well)(But, I got around that, finally, and I explain at the end of this thread) H) My G5 Power PC Dual 2.5 is connected to the internet *Does anybody have some creative solutions to work through this pickle? I would check to see if an OS9 folder is present using the finder. If so, I would only need to buy an OS9 install/restore disk and install OS9 into that folder. The folder would have been created when the person installing OSX checked the box "Install OS9 Drivers" during the installation. If not, I would need both the OS9 install/restore disk and a Tiger software restore disk or retail disk. I would boot from the Tiger disk. With a cube, that requires inserting the disk, shutting down, and restarting while holding down the "C" key until the welcome screen appears. I would select to do an "Archive and Install" under custom installs and be sure to check the box "Install OS9 Drivers." After the install is complete, OS9 can be installed into its folder and you can boot into OS9 to complete the firmware update. The FAQ here contains instructions for updating the firmware.

Hi Pablo,
Thanks for your time and help!! Let me update you on what I did today (pre-Your Advice). A) I don't think I mentioned that I also bought a new Hard Drive (250GB) and plan to use Hi-Cap for 125GBx2 partions . . . , so, I thought I'd try to install the original OS Discs that came with the Cube, and then update the OS through Apple (9.1 update). Well, as I mention before, that this Cube came from a Japanese friend, so, the OS 9.0.4 discs are in Japanese, and, I couldn't navigate it! Not to mention that I'm not sure if the the English Update or the 4.1.9 firmware would feel comfortable with the bilingual marriage. So, back to square one. C) So, if the above plan fails or is jettisoned for the all English option, then I'm going to re-install the original Hard Drive (per your advice) and see if the OS 9 folder exists. D) QUESTION: If the OS 9 folder does not exist, then what procedure and which OS 9 disc set would I need in order to get back into OS 9 business? I need (as I've read) OS 9.1~ (but not OS 10) in order to install the 4.1.9 Boot ROM, which will allow me to install the Powerlogix Firmware for the new CPU. E) There is this option (I think) of having two bootable OS's on the new 250 GB Hard Drive (utilizing the Hi-Cap as well): 1st Partition OS9 [10 GB], 2nd Partition OS10 [20GB?], 3rd partition [95GB], 4th Partition [125GB], or there about. What do you think about this setup?? *I'm thinking that this would allow me to do any future unknown maintenance within OS9, and allow me to function daily in OS10. I'm not sure about this though . . . F) BTW, I did manage to get the Cube hooked up to the internet (with the old hard drive running OS10.4.11 (I do have these discs). I do like the little machine, and I am partial to Power PC's. I'm doing lots of Photoshop, After Affects, Final Cut work for CD/DVD production, and the Cube will fit right in, though I do not want to dump too much more money into it. But my CS3 software is compatible, and eventually I'll purchase a 500GB Hard Drive that I'll Hi-Cap (damn, should have done that this time . . . , oh well . . . ) Your help is very much appreciated Pablo!! I think I have found what you need. YourMacStore is a CubeOwner site sponsor. Take a look here. Once you get this, you will have several different options for installing OS 9, using either of the hard drives, and you won't find a better price for the install cd. You will be able to either boot from the OS 9 cd, select English, and go from there on the new hard drive before installing OS X, or you could use the Tiger DVD to create the classic environment OS 9 folder during install on the new hard drive and use the OS 9 cd later without needing to boot from it, or you could do the archive and install of Tiger on the old hard drive while creating an OS 9 folder. If the Tiger disk you have is not retail, if it is a software restore disk, then the third option of archive and install will be what you will want to do.
Other people have a better knowledge of partition schemes on hard drives, but I have another computer with OS 9 and Tiger, and I'll start it up and take a look at how the partitions are situated and get back to you. -------------------- Pablo

Thanks Pablo,
A) I saw that disc prior to my writing, but, IMAC disc and fresh install, OK? NOTICE FROM BOOT ROM PAGE: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1285?viewlocale=en_US "The G4 Cube Firmware Update 4.1.9 will run only on G4 Cube models running Mac OS 9.1 or later from a local hard disk. If you are using Mac OS X on your Cube, you must start up from a local Mac OS 9.1 or later writeable partition (not a CD or network disk) before following the update instructions." C) I think the partitioned dual boot OS would be good, but, I could use your advice after you check your Cube OS 9/10 set-up. I will order that disc ASAIHFY (As Soon As I Hear From You) . . . You've been very reassuring to this NewBeCube owner, and please keep it coming. I have to get this resolved and set up before the 30 day return policy expires on the CPU (through OWC), just in case it is a dud. SORRY Pablo, one more thing: Concerning the SETTING for the Hard Drive: http://www.cubeowner.com/forums/index.php?...ost&id=3416 The original HD (Maxtor 20GB) has TWO couplings: On 9/10 & 7/5 Referring to the graph, what do you think I need, an/or other settings??? enable lba48, that link is to a script written by Pareis that you can run in Terminal from Tiger to enable the cube to recognize the portion of your new hard drive above 128 gb without using hi-cap. Just download it, drag and drop it into Terminal, and press return.
Go to the manufacturer website for your new hard drive to verify the jumper settings. The new drive arrived set to cable select, they all do. You must set the jumper to "Master" for use in a cube. That second jumper you referred to is doing nothing in its parallel position 5-7. The IMac/EMac 9.2 full install cd should work fine. I just tried to boot from a 9.1 update cd, and it didn't work, so maybe update cds are not bootable or there is a compatibility issue with my processor. In my case, I did the firmware update by installing OS 9 by itself on my new hard drive and before upgrading my processor. I was never planning to use it again, so after that was done, I partitioned the drive with Disk Utility from the OSX DVD. I made two partitions, 127.xx and all the rest, and installed Tiger in the first partition. It is my understanding that Leopard requires a separate partition within the first 128 for OS 9, but Tiger does not. Tiger will create the OS 9 folder containing the OS 9 drivers, and they will exist in the same partition. You bring the folder to the desktop and put it back to bless it and make it active. If you create a separate partition for OS 9, it should be the second partition within the first 128, and then the third partition will be everything else. There will be the extra complication of selecting for OS 9 compatibility when you boot from the Powerlogix cd to install the firmware patch to enable your new dual 7447. It will need to be made compatible with both Tiger and OS 9. Hope that helps for now. These issues are covered in the forums under OS 9 Classic, and under Hard Drives. Maybe some others will chime in with advice about partitioning, booting into OS 9, and firmware compatibility issues. -------------------- Pablo

I don't know your source for the CPU upgrade you mention (new / 2nd hand), but make sure to have a base fan installed in the Cube to allow for proper cooling with such an upgrade... |

Hi
Hope you don't mind me emailing you. I too have recently acquired a Cube (500mhz version) and bought a dual 1.5GHZ card to install into it. The cube has Boot Rom 4.1.9f installed and a hard drive running Leopard 10.5.8. My problem is that I can't seem to get the cube to start up from the powerlogix CD as per the instructions that came with the upgrade. The CD is recognized when I insert it into the cube. I then shut the cube down and have tried to follow the instructions regarding holding the reset button in, pressing the power button, waiting for the button to flash repeatedly (no sound from the cube as I don't have speakers connected), then releasing the reset and holding the C button down...Nothing happens. The CD drive just makes a noise suggesting it's trying to read from the CD but then it stops and that's it...nothing onscreen. I've downloaded the dog of the powerlogix CD from their site, burned it and tried the same procedure...but I cannot get to the open firmware screen that is shown in the instruction manual this way... Any ideas? Have you solved your firmware upgrade to 4.1.9 and managed to get the CD to work? Thanks |

Be sure you are pressing and holding the Programmer's Button, not the Reset button. It is the button closest to the video ports, on the left as you look at the cube from the back. It may help to have another person hold down the "C" key immediately when the power light begins to flash. Keep the C key held down until the firmware update screen appears. -------------------- Pablo

I finally managed to get to the firmware screen as per the instructions. You're comment about holding the C key as soon as the light starts to flash helped me to finally sort things out. Thanks so much for that. I held the programmer button (as I had been doing before), pressed the power button and then pressed C as soon as the light started to flash whilst at the same time letting go of the power and programmer button. I was so pleased!! Anyway, it was then pretty straightforward to swap out the processor and deal with all the wires and connections. However, even though it is now a dual 1.5GHZ (with 1.5GB of RAM), when I was installing the new fan's connector into the small power connector on the power supply card I managed to pull that small power connector off. So I guess I'm going to have to try and solder it back on or find somewhere else to plug it into that the cable will reach...any ideas on that? |

I don't know how long your cable is, but i avoided the small power connector and soldered my fan's power leads to have quiet 7V operation (check my post here for the 5V and 12V pins). The shown connector allows for easy soldering due to its size. If you want to run the fan at full 12V, just solder the black lead to one of the middle connectors (Ground). Hi All,
Well, it's been a month of waiting . . . . I finally received an OS9.1 Install disc, that I had to buy from the U.S. (I'm in Japan). If you read the first few post in this series, then you know what I am attempting to do with this Cube. 1) The problem I am now facing is trying to connect to the internet so that I can download the required Boot ROM version for the Powerlogix CPU firmware. I had the Cube connected to the net with OSX, but, OS9??? 2) The new 250 GB HD is installed and has OS9 bootable (which is a requirement to install update version of Boot ROM. 3) When I installed OS9 on the new HD, I attempted to create a 120 GB partition, but, don't think it worked. I spent half a day searching the net to find out if I should make the partition before I apply the Hi-cap driver or after. Very frustrating. And further, what should the partitions on a 250 GB HD be for optimal configuration (as there are so many suggestions floating around). 120/125/11? I finally just hit go, and installed. I can't find anything in OS9 that resembled Disc Utilities of OSX. 4) I tried every possible configuration in the Internet Set Up, no go (but, I think this is my first priority). Recommendations . . . ? Tired This post has been edited by CubeJack: Aug 26 2011, 10:03 AM |

I'm still on the same day (meaning I haven't knocked off for the next day . . . yet), took a long break, then while re-reading the Apple page concerning the 4.1.9 Boot ROM update, I came across a couple lines that put a twinkle in my eye:
"Firmware Updates are also available for Power Mac G4 models and iMac computers with slot-loading CD or DVD drives." Ah Ha! Q: After OSX has been installed as a permanently selected start up drive, does the new Boot ROM update automatically transfer to the new system? I don't know how that works. I mean, if you create a separate partition, or, a classical set-up, or, ??? Now: 1) How to arrange the HD partitions? A) Arrange HD partitions before installing OSX? C) Afte????sleep . . . . . good night . . . , I did get more done in the last hour of this day, than in the previous 14 hours . . . , looking forward to any comments I hope to receive while I ZZzzzzz . . . |

1) The problem I am now facing is trying to connect to the internet so that I can download the required Boot ROM version for the Powerlogix CPU firmware. I had the Cube connected to the net with OSX, but, OS9??? First the firmware update. I started with a new hard drive and loaded OS9 onto it, like you. To connect to the internet, I didn't try to use the airport card as I remember. I used an ethernet cable plugged into my router. OS9 came with an earlier version of Internet Explorer, and I used that to log on to Cubeowner and downloaded the firmware update from FAQ>Firmware then followed the instructions on that page to load the update. You have a lot to do, so one thing at a time . . . This post has been edited by Pablo: Aug 26 2011, 08:54 PM -------------------- Pablo

Ok, I'll have to search this out. I have OS9.1 on the Cube with updated Boot ROM, and don't know if the next step is:
A) Update to OSX (AND, if I do this, do I create a separate partition and have both OSs to switch back and forth, what size the partitions should be, and what is the procedure? etc. etc. etc.) |
