So after getting my slick cw-8123-c DVD/cdrw drive (of powerbook origins) off ebay, it seems there is a small albeit humorous complication. It turns out that the connector for the 7121 and the 8123 are upside-down from one another-- that is, the adapter board that I have now fits fine on the original drive, but sticks out like a panhandle on the other drive, since it is made to connect the other direction. Though I could probably make it work (since I will be mounting the drive on my own in an enclosure), it does kind of suck... is there any other adapter board or some way to get around this? Maybe there is a different cw-8123-c drive out there? confused.gif

This is a common problem, the CDRW or DVD drives in the cubes and slot loading imacs had the connector in a different way. You just need a slimline IDE adapter board and a floppy drive power connector (with Molex connector on one end). I think Directron.com has both of these...

Glad to hear that it's not just because I'm a moron that ordered the wrong thing smile.gif
Got a link for the ide board? I searched around on the directron site and didn't find anything resembling an adapter board...

This looks to be what I need:
http://www.baber.com/baber/products/slimline_cd_adapter.htm

Then yes, I see where I would need a floppy to molex converter cable, such things are available on newegg as well I believe...

but wtf... $25?

Here are the links, the IDE adapter is backordered:

http://directron.com/cddvdadapter.html

http://www.directron.com/idpowconad.html

Toatal will be about $17 shipped or so...

Or get the adapter from here for even cheaper:

http://www.dfwdepot.com/dvd-ram/index.php?...;products_id=11

They have a cable but don't know if it will work (probably will but you get 10 for that price!!!);

Here's one that comes with the power cable for $10.45, including shipping. *

link

There are other ones listed on ebay. (Are we allowed to say that now, Laurie?)

*Oops, no power cable, as pointed out in a later post.

I don't think the cable is included in that linked auction, it just describes what connectors are present on the adapter...

You're right, Paris, I misread the description. I emailed the seller, and he confirmed that it doesn't include the power adapter cable, just the connector on the circuit board. I bought 2 of the slimline adapters earlier this year, and one came with the power cable, but I don't remember the seller's name. Sorry.

Can you just swap the boards with your current drive? Just wondering... I did when I swapped my old CDRW from my cube into my imac... then again, I haven't tried the drive in the imac yet

Unfortunately laptop drives have the IDE connector upside down and the connector board from imac/cube optical drives does not fit properly. Look at this CO gallery:

Nice. Thanks for the links, looks like that will be just fine. Come to think of it I have some floppy power connectors in a pile of stuff in the garage-- I got half a dozen old pc towers from work and scrapped them, now I have cables up the wazoo smile.gif

Hopefully all will be spiffy once I get the board ordered in-- I get my 320gb drive next week... for a grand total of a 400gb media center smile.gif

can't wait!
