Thomas prepared this chart last year, in the same spirir as the video card chart that people like so much. It's fallen a bit out of date, what with all the turmoil that persists in the accelerator biz, but I've cleaned it up a tad with my good eye (LOL) and now am asking you all to take a pass at it to correct/add any glaring omissions or mistakes.

Things that are discontinued on the manufacturer's site, but still available elsewhere that you have confirmed, may be added - but please list the source for those upgrades if you add them.

Download the LATEST Excel spreadsheet version below, make your proposed changes and email the new versions to me at my name @ this site .com. By this weekend I should then have a mostly accurate chart posted in the FAQ for your convenience.

On the CPU Director (aka CPUD for those in the know) front, I have it on good authority that a new and improved version of CPUD with 10.4.5 support should be ready to roll by March 27. One of OWC's (and mine) favorite software developers is on the case and he's rarely been known to let folks down, so I think we'll all be pleased and find it worth the wait. In the meantime, please keep in mind that if you are concerned about keeping your Cube cool without CPUD, you can install Apple's CHUD Tools (free) and enable the NAP setting at login, thanks to a script that Gene Hack thoughtfully whipped up for us. See this post for details and instructions: http://www.cubeowner.com/forums/index.php?...189&#entry73189

I wonder if the PLm 7457 Dual 1.3 has (2x) 2 MB L3? Or just one?

Also, this card somehow reports temperature data.

One more on Gene Hack's NAP script, not sure that he's kept his script up to date with the latest CHUD upgrade that rolled this last week...

Hope all is better with your eye.... I have battled eye disease, eye shots, laser, vitrectomy peel, gas bubbles and the like for several years so I understand the recovery process very well.

It's 2MB L3 on each processor. I guess I can clarify that on the chart.

The NAP script should only be used with CHUD Tool v3.5.2. Later versions of CHUD Tools had NAP disabled by Apple.

The eye is healing. It's a little better each day. Will be weeks before it's completely healed they tell me, but I'm trying to remain confident. I had an optic nerve sheath fenestration to relieve severe papilledema (swelling of the optic nerve), caused by increased intracranial hypertension (which is caused by excess cerebral spinal fluid). Medical management (via Diamox) and lumbar punctures to drain off the excess CSF failed to work and my vision was degrading rapidly in my right eye, with my left eye thankfully remaining fairly stable, although it had degraded somewhat. Although I have other symptoms from the IIH (namely high pressure headaches), the visual loss is the most devastating in terms of leading my "normal" life, so the ONSF procedure was a logical next step for me, instead of a ventriculo-peritoneal (V-P) shunt or lumbo-peritoneal (L-P) shunt, both of which have added risks and complications that I couldn't accept.

The procedure itself is one I am glad I was under general anesthesia for smile.gif Here's a good non-jargon description of it: "In the optic nerve sheath fenestration procedure, the surgeon first makes an incision in the optic nerve’s protective covering. The surgeon then temporarily removes one of the muscles that rotate the eye inward. The eyeball is rotated to the side, allowing the surgeon to see the optic nerve behind it. Slits are cut into the optic nerve sheath, allowing the excess fluid to escape and harmlessly absorb into surrounding tissues. A special hook removes any adhesions. The eyeball and the muscle are then put back in position."

Hopefully with an approach that does not break at each and every incremental update.

I can't say for sure about that - if the kernel changes, it would be unwise to allow the application to ignore it and potentially cause far greater harm to your machine.

You actually shifted a bunch of rows, which left many empty cells and added a reference to a 533 mod, with no instructions. if you want to include a mod, please submit it as a separate FAQ with complete details. Meanwhile, I cleaned up the OEM lines. Thanks.

It might be nitpicking at this point, but is it worth mentioning external vs. internal L2 cache? The on-chip L2 runs at full speed, whereas the external L2 of the older processors runs at a fraction of the CPU speed. Some documents just call this a "backside" cache, whether it's L2 or L3. The freescale web page shows this distinction among its PPC lines:

http://www.freescale.com/webapp/sps/site/t...2468rH3bTdG8653

There may be some relevent info here too:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PowerPC_G4
http://www.geek.com/procspec/apple/g4.htm

If we're trying to make a comprehensive chart, I don't see a problem with putting DIY type upgrades in there too. The dual apple 500MHz cpu would be an example of this; it has been done several times at least. So there would be 4 categories: OEM, currently offered upgrades, discontinued upgrades, and popular DIY CPU transplants. Of course the DIY category can have all kinds of * and warnings about heat, VRMs, using pointed tools, etc. if needed.

At that point one might benefit from the ratio that goes with each cache 1:1, 1:2, 1:6 etc
this might be more informative than internal verses external

The Apple original has the L2 running at 1:2

Thanks for your input, folks, but please refer to my original post where I say "Download the LATEST Excel spreadsheet version below, make your proposed changes and email the new versions to me at my name @ this site .com. I don't object to Mods and DIY upgrades - but you will need to submit them to me in full if you want them added as a reference in the chart.

Actually I didnt shift really anything. Hmmm, must have gotten messed up when it was translated back into Excel format. I was afraid of that. I dont have excel just Appleworks and I used that for the translation. It looked fine on my screen. Maybe I should have put it in the latest excel translation instead of an earlier one but I tried to go with the most compatible.

You can toss out the mod bit, just note that it requires a small mod to set the CPU multiplier since it comes from the DA 133Mhz bus machines. Not a major mod at all really, its practically a plug in play CPU for the Cube if you know the mod. If the mod needs to be added to the FAQ, I could write up quick instructions for it sometime, no sweat.
